Uses of Curcuma

Another name for curcuma longa is turmeric and most of us have this spice in our kitchen cabinets. Turmeric belongs in the family of ginger. Curcuma is used to give the bright yellow color to mustard and also is used for conserving and flavoring the mustard.

Curcuma is used as a food coloring, gives curry the peppery taste and yellow color, is used as a spice and is used for medical purposes to treat a variety of ailments.

Curcuma gives the yellow color also to cheese, margarine, beverages and cakes also.

India, China and Europe have used curcuma for hundreds of years for medical treatments and for food colorings and spices.

Curcuma root is crushed and mixed with seawater in North India and sprinkled to remove the negative influence from places, persons, and things during wedding ceremonies and it is also applied to the bride and groom’s skin to ward off evil.

Curcuma is used for so many medical treatments and some of them are rheumatism, skin and eye inflammation, menstrual cramps, arthritis, hypoglycemia, stomach ache, skin problems, muscular problems, flatulence, colic, ringworm, chest pain, bloating, and appetite loss. It used to be used as a cure for jaundice. More uses for the curcuma in the medical field are tuberculosis, bronchitis, colds and asthma.

Curcuma can be mixed with seawater to make a paste, cooked and pressed to make a paste, cooked and pressed for the essential oils. Turmeric and the roots all can be used for one use or another.

Many of these treatments have not been tested on humans yet but have worked well on rodents so many of these are still in the testing process but there are so many good results of the use of curcuma.

Curcuma is used as an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and the curcuma doesn’t cause ulcers as so many anti-inflammatory treatments do.
It is currently being used as a treatment for ulcers in the western countries.

Turmeric is an antiseptic, anti-platelet, gives anti-cancer effects because it kills the cancer cells in skin, colon, fore stomach, duodenum and ovarian cancers in the lab rodents so this is still in the testing but is giving us much hope.

Curcuma is also an anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial affects and is a great topical analgesic. They are testing the curcuma treatment on diabetes in rodents as of now also.

The essential oils from the curcuma enter the body through inhaling so they are great to use in vaporizers, candles and baths.

The curcuma essential oils help stimulate the immune system, accelerate toxin elimination, promote new cell growth, stimulate digestion, stimulate blood circulation and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Some home remedies curcuma is used for is mixing it with milk to treat the flu, cough, and runny noses.

The leaf oils and extract can be used for sunscreens and bio-pesticides. The roots can be pressed to extract the juice and it is mixed with water for earaches and to clean sinuses through the nasal cavities.
